This is a time of transformation — when childhood begins to stretch its wings toward independence. The children stand poised between worlds, no longer small, yet not fully grown. Their minds awaken to new ideas, their emotions deepen, and their sense of self begins to take form. At Shishukunj, they are guided with patience and understanding, surrounded by adults who listen, support, and create spaces for them to explore who they are becoming.
As their inner worlds expand, so do the avenues for expression. Through art, music, dance, dialogue, and reflection, they learn to give voice to their thoughts and feelings. Programs like Shabadashala, help connect children to their inner selves through folk music and related activities, while open discussions and dialogues nurture empathy and broaden their perspectives.
The class teacher remains a steady presence — an anchor amid change — offering reassurance and guidance. Experts from diverse fields visit to help children understand the physical and emotional transformations they experience, fostering awareness and self-acceptance. To support this process, opportunities are created for children to conduct events and take charge of their immediate surroundings.
Hands and minds work together in creativity and purpose. In the Design and Innovation Club, children identify real-world problems and craft thoughtful solutions using everyday materials. The EcoBuddy Club deepens their concern for the environment through meaningful, hands-on activities. They learn not just about sustainability, but how to live it.
At this stage, the ability to think abstractly begins to bloom. The science lab becomes a place of wonder, questioning and where inferencing skills begin to take root. Mathematics is explored through patterns, symmetry, art, and real-life projects, reinforcing conceptual understanding, problem-solving and computational skills.
Their appreciation of Kutch deepens through exposure to its crafts — weaving, embroidery, pottery — connecting them to the culture and artistry of their land. Writing and expression mature as language grows in depth and precision. With a dedicated library period, children are encouraged to continue reading for pleasure.
Learning extends beyond the classroom — into cycling trails, hikes, nature camps, and overnight stays — where friendship, adaptability, and connection to the earth grow naturally. Interactions with children from different backgrounds, including those from our outreach centres, nurture empathy and inclusivity. Through shared experiences, they learn that community is built from kindness and collaboration.
