Educating for Life
At Shishukunj, we see education as a journey that nurtures a love for nature, a deep empathetic connection with the world and a heightened aesthetic sensibility.
Central to Shishukunj is the student-teacher relationship, which is underpinned by mutual respect and affection. It is a space where the educator and the learner investigate together both the outer world and the inner beliefs holding it together
We believe that true learning happens when there is absence of fear, comparison and competition. In such a conducive learning environment there is a space to ask questions and inquire, framed by a wider sense of responsibility.
Our hope is that through awareness and self understanding, children will develop a sense of excellence and purpose beyond conventional success and make a positive contribution to their communities and the world around them .

Our Vision of Education
Our school
The school buildings and facilities
The school buildings have been designed thoughtfully to reflect the philosophy of the school. Instead of the standard corridors system, Shishukunj school has been built in cluster formation with each cluster accommodating 4 classrooms. This allows for each child to be seen as an individual. The rooms are large and airy with views of the greenery around. There are spill over spaces at the back of the classroom for children to work in small groups, pairs or individually. The admin building has an aesthetically pleasing circular design. It has a courtyard with a rock garden made with the local flora, which transforms with the seasons. Buildings and nature blend seamlessly in the campus.
We have made conscious efforts at greening the campus, and children have been part of the afforestation programme. We are slowly working towards getting all the vegetables for our consumption from our organic farm on the campus and children have been involved in growing vegetables and grains. There has been a reduction in the use of plastic within the campus through the awareness raising efforts of the ecobuddy club.

This allows for each child to be seen as an individual rather than a part of a big herd. The walls have been constructed in the traditional style called ‘random rubble’ and the stones have been procured within a 60km radius. The rooms are large and airy with big windows to give a sense of being in nature to the children. Buildings and nature blend seamlessly in the campus. There is a large hall with 3 international size badminton courts; the hall can host stage programmes with a capacity of 1000 people. It is flanked on the northern side with a 25 metre swimming pool. There is a cycling track along the perimeter of the school campus and an outdoor multi-sport court. The admin building has an aesthetically pleasing circular design.

Community Connect
Connecting with Communities, Creating Change
The Community Outreach Programme is mainly dedicated to the less fortunate sections of the society and to provide a new direction and creativity in the existing traditional education system. Even today, there are many communities, who are deprived from the light of development. The existing schools in such areas are entirely focused on books-and-examinations based education. There is no scope of holistic development for a child/student in such institutions. Such a large part of our society is still deprived of many opportunities and is less privileged.
Shishukunj is an inclusive space which does not discriminate on the basis of caste, colour, creed or religion. Socio – economic circumstances should not be a barrier for those who want to access a space like Shishukunj. It is a space which respects nature and all life forms, and inquires into the nature of the world and what it means to be a good human being. It is a space where a child is given freedom to discover her interest and passion. We provide concessions to those families who may not be able to afford our fees but strongly connect with our vision of education.
